Bart has been doing sculpture since the early eighties, during which time he showed in galleries and participated in juried exhibitions throughout Arizona.

In 1990 he moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, where he focused more on one of a kind furniture and architectural wood work, such as circular stairways, grand entry ways, and large log and timber work while still producing sculptures.

During this time he traveled extensively and became interested in the temple carvings he encountered, mostly in Asia, South and Central America and Mexico.
Both the woodworking and travel greatly influenced his work.

Bart rarely has a preconceived plan when starting a piece and prefers to be informed by the moment and the story in the wood itself. Though this might seem random, he has developed a style that gives his body of work a relaxed cohesiveness.

Furniture design and construction still occupies his time, giving him the opportunity to be in the forest finding and retrieving the wood he turns into pieces.  This is one of his favorite parts of the process, the first glimpse into the story of the tree…the environment it grew in.  It also allows getting many of the pieces from one log which gives them a subtle consistent integrity.  Combing natural raw features of the wood with fluid contemporary lines continues the story from forest to furniture…. “I want to bring the quiet beauty of the natural world into your home in a form you can use and appreciate everyday, furniture and sculpture are wonderful ways to do this.”
